Hi there! I’m Maria Nguyen, a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Cairns, Australia. I specialise in cinematic storytelling style for couples, families, and individuals seeking for meaningful photographs to preserve important moments in their lives. My style of photography is honest, emotive, natural and modern.

I established Zen Photography 7 years ago to document love stories and families in an intimate, personal and meaningful way. Throughout the years, I’ve noticed that what remains true as the best photos age are the moment’s authenticity and the depth of a person’s expression.

If this resonates with you, then I’d love the chance of documenting a chapter in your life.

But first things first. Before you decide to share a part of your personal story with me, I’ll go first.

I’ve drifted a long way to end up here in this little tropical paradise, where I now live with my partner, our two boys, and one rambunctious puppy. My nomadic past has made me multilingual and an endless craving for travelling.

Some more things about me…

Good food and honest friends are two things I insist on having. I choose stimulating conversations and meaningful connections over small talk, always.

I cannot live without music. I listen to everything from Pearl Jam to Ben Howard to Halsey.

When I’m not chasing light I play taiko (Japanese drum) with the Cairns Taiko team. I signed up to help myself get over performance anxiety by performing in front of large crowds of strangers, but it has given me so much more than I’d imagined.

I must absolutely  get on a plane at least once a year and go somewhere, preferably to places with a great food culture and lots to see. Travelling is my biggest addiction so wherever you’re getting married, my bags are always ready.

About my work…

I hold the highest standard for my work, and take your wedding/portrait very seriously. I cannot stand the thought of you missing out on an important moment on your wedding day or your newborn baby not having a meaningful photograph with his parents to treasure when he grows up.

The passion I put into documenting key moments in my own life is the same passion that I put into documenting the lives of my clients. I have gone through all the milestones myself and understand the importance of having honest photographs to preserve personal history.

I believe in thoughtfully captured imagery and genuine storytelling. I do this through photojournalistic-style photography, (I was a journalist in my former career), combined with classic portraiture and fine art photography to tell the best visual story possible.

My approach to photography is low key and unobtrusive.

So if you’re about to get hitched to the love of your life, or if you two are about to welcome your first baby into this world, I’d love to be there to document that milestone. Whatever story you’re wanting to share, I’d love to hear it. xx
