Becoming a part of someone’s wedding day isn’t a small deal. As a photographer you rock up thinking that you’re just going to take some pretty pictures, but then you find yourself becoming an intimate part of someone’s very important day. Not just their wedding day, but a family reunion that only happens once in a long time, and for Jo and Tyler’s families who live on two difference continents it may well be a once in a lifetime union for their families.

I love it when people treat the photographer like part of their family. Even just for a day. Hop in our car, we’ll drive you to the church. And they take the time learning even your partner’s name even if it’s of no relevance to them. I felt to honoured to be treated with such kindness and openness. And even just in the short 8 hours, I learned so much about Jo and Tyler’s families. People started telling their stories to you. Jo’s parents happily shared secrets to their successful 55-year marriage with me as they drove me to the church in their hatchback. Her brother made sure I signed the guestbook. Just little moments like that made my job seem like the best in the world.

It was a pretty sweet day, actually. Getting to watch Jo’s dad write his speech over a breakfast of brussels sprouts and mushroom, (they’re good for your heart!) and seeing everyone cry as he delivered his speech at the reception was probably one of the most poignant moments. And there were so many of those throughout the day.

Thanks Jo and Tyler for letting me be part of your special day. It was beautiful. And I’m glad the sun came out. xoxo
